Construction crews will be hard at work rebuilding the retaining wall that sits along southbound Veterans Way this week and into next week.

The construction has lead to traffic being split off with single lanes in both directions for a short distance.

Project Engineer for the Town of Okotoks James Cameron says the wall is a little worse for wear.

"There's a little bit of failure in some places, some of the timbers are bowing out that's the main issue we have," he says. "There's no immediate risk but in an effort to repair it we are essentially building a new wall in front of it."

He says it's quite the process to just get at the wall and build in front of the old one.

"We'll be cutting out asphalt, curb, pulling out granules that should take a couple weeks and they started on Tuesday. It should be a quick job the crews have said they might work through the weekend too."

Cameron says when the work is finally done on the wall it won't be just a regular retaining wall.

"At some point in the near future we'll be putting out message out to put some sort of commemorative artwork on that so it will become an art feature. But that's likely next year when it will be constructed but we'll be looking for an artist or someone to come up with a plan to turn that into one."

Motorists are asked to be aware of the crews working on the wall and slow down in the single lanes.
