Registration for the High River Library's summer reading programs is open as of June 1. Summer Reading Program Coordinator Kendall Kilgour says there will be crafts, games, and more.

"The summer reading program is finally here, and the theme is Wild. It'll be a summer filled with animal games, wacky crafts, and adventurous activities. The club is a seven week free program for students who are in kindergarten to grade 4."

Summer reading programs will run July 5 to August 18 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Kilgour says there will be two time slots each day, 10-11:30am and 1-2:30pm. Kilgour says the sessions will be lots of fun.

"During the sessions we will check in with their reading logs, see how much they've read over the week. We will do different crafts and games, and they all kind of are in the theme of animals. We will learn about habitats and we will learn about behaviours, and whatever animal they want to kind of learn about we can do that."

Kilgour says the library is also looking for volunteers in grades 6 to 12 to help out with the program. Volunteers will help with set up and clean up, and most importantly acting as role models for kids participating in the club. She says the program helps kids continue reading whether at home or on vacation.

"Often times over the summer, we kind of forget about school and the importance of reading. So, by joining this club, then they can just continue doing it at their own pace wherever they are, on vacation or at home. It'll just help them continue reading so that they're ready in September again."

Kilgour says the library is also offering summer story-time for kids 2 to 5 years old who are accompanied by an adult on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11a-m. Summer story-time will include stories, songs, and finger-rhymes.
