Every year libraries and schools seem to have more and more pieces of literature removed from their shelves for numerous reasons, but for one week out of the year libraries are allowed to promote the books on "do not read read list".

Assistant Librarian at the Okotoks Library Lara Grunow says 'Freedom To Read Week' is a way to show young readers that even though some books are banned they are still allowed to be read.

"Freedom To Read Week is a national incentive that is held every year this week in February," she says. "It's just for people to understand that it's important to be able to read whatever you want, it's to protect the freedom to read what you want."

Grunow says they have titles that are on the banned list but still encourages the means of reading no matter the literature.

"Things get banned for all sorts of different reasons, people would like to ban books for certain reasons. But here at the library we provide access to everything and anything and we do not stop anyone from coming in and reading whatever they choose to read.

Some publications on the banned list include, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Hunger Games and the Harry Potter franchise of books.

You can find the banned titles at the library as a display of historic books banned can be found.
