Creepy clowns have swept the nation and it seems the unwanted trend has made its way to Okotoks.

A sighting in the Crystal Ridge area was reported recently and Okotoks RCMP want to inform locals on the actions they should take if a sighting occurs.

Okotoks RCMP Sgt. Sukh Randawa says calling the police is priority on a persons to do list.

"The public is spooked right now with the creepy clown thing and we are just reaching out to the public to enforce and reassure that we are out there for their safety and the children's safety. So if they come upon anything or are intimidated by something like that call the RCMP."

Randawa wants people to know that extra precautions are being taken by the law enforcement with Halloween right around the corner.

"We will also have Citizens on Patrol out and about patrolling, assisting us and reporting any suspicious activity. But our full watch will be out there that night so we will have full strength here in the town of Okotoks."

Trick or treaters are encouraged to stay on the main roads and to avoid back alleys and dark side roads.

But RCMP aren't just educating the people out participating in Halloween activities, Randawa says homeowners also need to take some safety steps.

"Homeowners should also be cogent of the fact that you know its Halloween and with creepy clown stuff going around. Ensure that your house is well lit, keep your sidewalks and walkways completely clean, don't use candles, use light bulbs to light their houses and pumpkins and also keep your pets indoors."

Lastly RCMP are suggesting trick or treaters, parents or any party goers to steer clear of the creepy clown costume and to go as something else this year.

If any suspicious behavior or creepy clowns are spotted in and around the Foothills locals should call their local RCMP detachment.
