May long weekend is the official opening of the spring and summer holiday season which means there will be plenty of traffic activity on all major roadways in the province.

More than 4500 traffic violation tickets were handed out by the RCMP province wide last year during the Victoria Day weekend.

Okotoks RCMP Sgt Sukh Randhawa says there will be law enforcement everywhere cracking down on those not enjoying the weekend responsibly whether it's their driving habits or not.

"Lots of people are going to be out and about, so is the RCMP we'll be patrolling the town, the highways and rural areas," he says. "We encourage everyone to have a good time but also be responsible this weekend."

With May long being the last opportunity for high school students to enjoy each others company before the end of the school year, Randhawa says that the weekend is for relaxation but one poor decision could be the means between life or death.

"The message is very clear from the RCMP, don't drink and drive. Be responsible, be aware of your friends, be aware of your surroundings and enjoy responsibly."

Randhawa says if you are out this weekend no matter the atmosphere you're in and you see something that isn't right. RCMP are there to help.

"We're resourceful to keep the community safe, have a wonderful time and great weekend the weather is going to be nice but be aware of your surroundings."
