Alberta RCMP are participating in National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day with a Checkstop Blitz.

On Saturday, Dec. 2, major roads and highways across the province will see checkstops as part of the large scale operation.

With the holidays coming up, Staff Sgt. Don Murray, District Commander, Capital Region Integrated Traffic Unit is reminding motorists that driving impaired creates a danger for all road users.

"The holiday season is right around the corner, so it's important that we get out on the roads early this December to remind motorists of the dangers that come with alcohol or drug impaired driving."

The day will see hundreds of RCMP officers and Sheriffs patrolling, taking impaired drivers off the road.

Motorists suspected of being impaired will be subject to a road side sobriety test that may result in license suspensions or criminal charges.

Superintendent of Alberta Sheriffs Rick Gardner says impaired driving is a leading cause of death on Alberta roads, but they can't tackle the issue alone.

"Everyone has a part to play and that starts with planning ahead to have a designated driver or a safe ride when heading out to the festivities."

Patrols and checkstops will run throughout the entire day Saturday.
