With it already being a few weeks until kids are back in school, some parents may be thinking about after school care.

Jen Wakely, recreational programmer for children with the Town of Okotoks, says registration for some programs opens as early as April, but some do still have room.

Wakely says there's certain certifications parents should look for when choosing a center.

"Make sure it's licensed for sure and definitely accreditation is a bonus," she says. "Accreditation is just the standard of best practices that different organizations use. The other thing is just making sure the staff are a good fit for your child."

Wakely says taking children to experience the program and its staff first hand is also recommended.

"Make sure you have the right fit for your child in the program. If your kid is a really active kid make sure the program is really active, if your kid is a quieter kid who likes lots of reading, make sure that's what they do in their program."
