The Okotoks Fire Department had a busy start to the month of December.

Okotoks Fire Chief Ken Thevenot

Fire Services responded to 27 different calls, but none were fire related.

Fire Chief Ken Thevenot says they dealt with a handful of aid calls last week.

"We had five motor vehicle accidents we attended, one public service somebody with a child was locked in a vehicle," he says. "We had three mutual aid calls, 14 medical responses, one odour investigation, one home accident and two alarm system activations."

With temperatures dropping this week and into next week parents may think it's a good idea to keep children in a vehicle but Thevenot says when in doubt take children out of cars when running errands.

"Do not leave a child unattended in a vehicle as there's a number of things that could happen especially in the summer time or even in the winter time as well sometimes it does happen accidentally with the electric locks, so from time to time we'll have that as well."

Thevenot once again wants to remind everybody the dangers of being near the river or storm ponds in town that they should be avoided and no one should attempt to skate on storm ponds.

"There's no doubt with this colder weather and we don't have a lot of snow so these storm ponds and some areas along the river there will be some ice. So the problem is when we have some warm weather right after that is when it becomes a problem."
