Okotoks RCMP are asking for residents help in finding those responsible for graffiti.

In recent weeks the markings OAC and GAWD, in various styles, have been marked in numerous locations throughout town.

Sgt. Sukh Randhawa says he doesn't believe the markings are gang related and aren't limited to one specific community.

"It's more of a mischief, a nuisance for the community. We see these from time to time on fences, underneath the bridge, on water tanks, that kind of thing. They're not specifically targeting an area, they're all over the place."

Another marking RCMP have noticed are the letters NBO which stands for Natural Born Outlaws, but Randhawa says this marking isn't as common.

On Tuesday, a Star of David with a swastika inside was found spray painted on the PharmaSave on Milligan Drive. Randhawa says he's uncertain if it's from one of the groups responsible for the other markings or someone else but that it is classified as a hate crime.

This graffiti on the PharmaSave on Milligan Drive is considered a hate crime by RCMP.

The Town has said graffiti decreases the area's aesthetic appeal, diminishes the sense of security in the community, and when it's not removed can attract more graffiti and other forms of vandalism and crime.

Randhawa explains if anyone witnesses graffiti taking place they should contact police immediately.

"Make notation of the description of the person who's doing it, don't approach them as you could get spray painted yourself. It's a safety thing that we encourage you not to engage but to call the police."

Okotoks RCMP are working with their Crime Reduction Unit and Municipal Enforcement on the matter.

Anyone with information can contact Okotoks RCMP at (403) 995- 6400 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
