Okotoks RCMP are looking for a man who's suspected to have impersonated a police officer in De Winton.

Sgt. Sukh Randhawa says RCMP received a complaint on July 21 from a woman saying she was pulled over by a vehicle with red and blue flashing lights whose driver presented himself as a cop and asked for her license and registration. She told the RCMP that the man told her to slow down and issued her a $200 fine and three demerits.

Randhawa says the man in question is not a sworn police officer in the province of Alberta or in Canada, and the appearance of the suspect is what tipped the woman off.

"It was mostly the outfit... the uniform he was wearing with his badge pinned on the chest," he says. "The RCMP does not do that, neither do sheriffs, so that was what stood out for her as suspicious and to call the RCMP."

The suspect has been described as a Caucasian male in his 20s to early 30s with short dark hair and stubble on his face, dark eyes, a slim build with a long face and square chin, and was wearing a tan uniform with a police badge pinned on his chest.

Randhawa says it's important people exercise caution.

"People have to be cognizant of who they're dealing with and who has pulled them over. In this case, the driver told her to slow down and issued her a $200 fine and three demerit points on her license. It's really suspicious at this time."

Randhawa says police are continuing to investigate and is asking anyone with information to call Okotoks RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
