As we remember those who fought and sacrificed their lives for our country's freedom, the Okotoks Legion will be kicking off their poppy campaign Friday.

The Legion was reinstated last year and are making the most of helping contribute to the community.

Maureen Haberstock, chair of the poppy campaign, says they're looking forward to distributing poppy boxes to help support veterans.

"It has been really heart warming and very encouraging to us to see the level of support overall in this community for our veterans as well for the work that the legion does," she says.

The campaign will officially open with local politicians receiving poppies from the legion at 3 p.m. at the cenotaph.

"We'll be pinning poppies on our MLA Wayne Anderson, our MP John Barlow and of course our dear mayor Bill Robertson," Haberstock says. "That is essentially the formal kick-off and following that you'll start to see an explosion of poppy boxes."

Haberstock says when you donate to the poppy fund, all proceeds will stay locally.

"The funds stay local in area and we do have a good number of veterans in the Okotoks area and a lot young folks that have served in Afghanistan and more recently in peace keeping missions."
