Okotoks residents can help conserve energy while learning about town for Earth Hour.

The Okotoks Museum is hosting their annual guided walk for Earth Hour this weekend in recognition of the occasion which encourages people to turn their lights off and refrain from using electricity for an hour.

Kathy Coutts, museum specialist, says the walk is a great way to take in a bit of Okotoks history.

"Rather than sitting at home in the dark, the Okotoks Museum and Archives is encouraging and inviting residents to come out for a guided walk of downtown Okotoks to learn a little about our history and some of the early businesses and residents who lived here."

Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia and is now coordinated by the World Wildlife Federation and has spread to countries all around the world.

Coutts says they'll kick the evening off at the museum.

"We're going to start at the museum, touch on some of the history in that part of town, then venture down North Railway Street, McCrae Street, and back again. An hour isn't too much time to pack in a lot of history but it's an interesting way to spend Earth Hour."

The walk is free and will start at the museum at 8:30 p.m. No registration is required.
