The Town of Okotoks is enlisting the use of virtual reality to attract potential investors.

They're working with VRchitect to allow viewers a look at town-owned lots that are available for development.

Colleen Thome, Economic Development Manager with the town, says it's similar to virtual home tours used in the real estate market, though to the town's knowledge, they are the first municipality to use the technology in this context.

"If we've got a prospect that wants to see how their business and their building might fit in with a business park, we can work together with the developer and with VRchitect, to create a visual representation of how that business might look, and how it might fit into the business park."

Currently, an animated video and downloadable virtual tour are available on the town's website, though Thome says there's more to come.

"Once COVID related limitations have been lifted, we'll be in a position to offer the full VR experience on-site using the VR glasses. People can choose to look at either the animation or to actually go into that VR experience and take a look around."

She says it's about staying current and innovative.

"We recognize the world has changed, and we need to be innovative to adapt. So, the town is continuing to move forward to encourage and support the development of new businesses in our community, especially those that embrace innovation and technology, and those that are prepared to move forward with us."
