A slower week for the Okotoks Fire Department last week.

Fire Chief Ken Thevenot says they only responded to 15 calls, which included an odour investigation and four alarm system activations.

"There was one controlled burn we had to respond to, we had two odour investigations, we assisted with seven medical responses, and we attended to a small grass fire."

Fire services is currently ramping up for their annual Fire Prevention Week in Okotoks which starts Sunday, Oct. 8.

The theme for Fire Prevention Week this year is every second counts, they'll focus on helping families plan escape routes and ensuring all households have two ways out in the event of an emergency.

Thevenot shares the department will also be giving tips on home safety.

"Every second does count, so make sure your smoke detectors are in good working order. Checking manufacturing dates which is always important to see when you have to replace them, and of course testing them to ensure the audible alarm is still sounding like it should."

Fire Prevention Week also includes an open house of the fire hall on Milligan Drive where residents can learn about safety, take in vehicle extraction and safety demonstrations, and experience what it's like to try and escape in the smoke tent.
