It looks like summer 2017 is shaping up to be one of the hottest on record.

With temperatures hovering around the 30C mark for most of July, and a heat wave in May, this is the warmest summer Okotoks has seen in about five years.

Kirk Thorneby, meteorologist with Environment Canada, says some months this summer have already hit the top ten for hottest on record.

"This year has been fairly warm through the first few months of summer, in the Calgary area May was the ninth warmest on record," he says. "June came in as the sixteenth warmest on record, which was skewed by the early parts of that warm spell at the beginning of the month. As we move into July obviously we all remember the good stretch of warm weather for the early part of July, so if nothing changes drastically for the rest of the month it looks like it will be the tenth warmest July on record."

Thorneby adds temperatures above normal should be expected into August as well.

"Looking at the long range forecast it looks like that trend is going to continue for the rest of the summer, with pretty high confidence of above normal temperatures for most of the area, and some models are actually indicating it could be upwards of two to three degrees above normal for the rest of the summer."

He adds early indications from Environment Canada show some of the warm weather will extend into the fall as well.
