The Okotoks Arts Council wants to make sure local artists can keep creating without worrying about financial barriers.

The OAC has two $500 grants they're looking to give to artists who specialize in any medium and genre of art.

Grants were given by the arts council a few years ago and in March the group reinstated them.

Cheryl Taylor, president of the OAC, says it'll come down to the strength of the artist's submission that'll help set them apart from other applicants.

"If it aligns with our mandate to connect, inspire, and educate, contribute something possibly to the community I think that would be something we'd look favourably on," she explains. "Be sure to include a nod to the Okotoks Arts Council in a public presentation."

It's a community grant but any artist living within the MD of Foothills is able to apply.

Taylor says she hopes the idea will expand.

"It's a small step in something we hope will grow. This is what arts councils are designed to do, support the community and art initiatives in various areas so it's just a first step in that direction."

The application deadline is Oct. 31.
