Okotoks Junior High student's are out in team colours on the track today.

The grade 7-9 school, is celebrating their final day of the annual track and field meet today.

Joanne Lafferty, a teacher at the school says hosting a track and field meet at the school meets the unit requirements for the Track and Field unit of Phys-Ed class, and gets the students out and active.

"So for the last two days, we've had our own school-wide track meet, where every student competes in five events.  They have to choose some on the running side, and some in the field side."

Every student will compete, but Lafferty says she uses the meet as an audition of sorts, for the school's track and field teams.

Lafferty states that the top students in each event will then move on to real competitive meets.

"It's competitive plus fun, because the top two in each event will go on to compete in divisions on May 4th."

One of the most widely anticipated events is the 4 x 100m relay race.

Lafferty says the students take the opportunity to start some friendly competition.

"At the end of the last day, we put  everyone on the finish line and we do the 4X1's as home rooms, so the student's are cheering for their own relay team."

Here's hoping the students were sent to school with sunscreen, as the weather even cooperated for the student's who have spent all day today, and yesterday outdoors competing.
