Almost $200,000 will go to seniors community programs and infrastructure in the Foothills thanks to the New Horizons Grant. Foothills MP John Barlow says the federal program has been around for several years, and this year nine organizations in the Foothills received funding.

"We've been pretty successful in accessing funds through the seniors program over the years. Really happy to see several great community programs receive some pretty substantial funding this year again that will ensure that they can offer programs to seniors but also maintain some critical infrastructure as part of their programs."

He says the organizations involved have worked hard to ensure they're giving seniors what want.

"It really shows the strength of the community programs that we have. Programs like Literacy for Life, The Valley Neighbors Club in Turner Valley, the Okotoks Library program. These groups are very active, progressive, and innovative in some of the programs that they come up with, but do these programs in consultations with the seniors in the community. What are the seniors looking for?"

Barlow says it's great to see some groups giving seniors innovative ways to learn more.

"I think a lot of the time we underestimate how tech savvy some of our seniors are or want to be. That's why Literacy for Life and the Okotoks Library and the Sheep River Library come up with some of these programs to ensure our seniors have every opportunity to learn new things. It gets them out, gets them active, gets them in a social atmosphere."

He says the New Horizons for Seniors Program has been around for years and has been an outstanding program in terms of assisting some wonderful community programs.

Here's a list of the organizations who received funding, thanks to MP John Barlow.
