Nanton's Mayor was surprised and a little disappointed in last week's census numbers.

The official count had Nanton's population drop by two people to 2,130 in 2016, from 2,132 in 2011.

Rick Everett says he was genuinely surprised.

"I expected it to go up with the new Westview subdivision growing quite rapidly and a lot's of new people moving into Town. We were actually quite surprised that the numbers went down."

Everett says it won't make much difference to how much grant money they can get from other levels of government, but it won't add any either.

He says the Town is considering doing it's own census.
