A unique development to improve regional emergency services training can finally go ahead.

The MD of Foothills No. 31 announced yesterday, Feb. 22 the signing of an agreement with TransCanada Corp. for the donation of 20 acres of land for a new regional Emergency Services Training Centre.

Leslie Lambert, Corporate Communications for the MD of Foothills, says the development located a few kilometres north of High River along Highway 2 will be used by all emergency first responders within the community.

"It will benefit fire departments, police and bylaw enforcement services, emergency medical services, public works and even private industry. It will provide opportunities for practical and classroom training, so it's very exciting."

The facility is planned to be constructed in stages, with a long term vision for possible uses as a new fire hall, emergency services office space, and an Emergency Coordination Centre for large scale events.

Lambert shares the facility will become a one-stop shop and major resource for emergency personnel in southern Alberta.

"There isn't anything like that in the southern part of the province right at the moment, so this will benefit a lot of first responders and emergency services personnel."

The MD of Foothills and Town of High River will begin joint planning and development for the site now that the land transfer has been finalized.
