The Okotoks Fire Department wants to make sure residents are safe on their long weekend adventures.

Ken Thevenot, Okotoks fire chief, says rafting on the river isn't recommended as it can change quickly and present many obstacles.

He has a few safety tips incase people do head out for a river float.

"Make sure that your watercraft is sturdy and safe, that you're wearing a personal flotation device and not just in the boat but make sure you wear it all the time, a throw bag so if somebody happens to fall out of your boat so you can throw the rescue rope to them," says Thevenot. "The other thing is never tying boats together, they can get caught up on an obstacle when floating down the river."

Whether heading out on the river or going for a hike, people should tell someone where their final destination is ahead of time so if they don't make it after a certain amount of time they can send help.

It also seems like campfires and May Long go hand in hand.

Thevenot says there's few things campers should do to ensure a positive campfire experience.

"Of course never leave it unattended, have a water supply of some sort handy so you can quickly put it out, keep it away from your tents, trees, tree roots, plants, and any other flammable type materials, and ensure the ground is nice and solid so none of the fire can go downwards as well into the roots that can create problems as well."

Campfires should also be in a pitted and contained area.

Restrictions will vary in each park and campground. Before heading out residents are encouraged to check websites to read up on rules and bans.
