A screening of a documentary about wireless radio frequency radiation in our environment was well received over the weekend.

A group called SMART Okotoks held the screening of the award-winning Generation Zapped at the Okotoks library Sunday, Feb. 25. The documentary covers the science and possible health concerns surrounding radio frequency radiation.

Wireless radio frequency radiation is produced by electronic devices, including Wi-Fi routers, cellphones, and televisions.

Amanda Brown, Co-Founder of SMART Okotoks, says around 30 individuals attended the screening.

"We had a representative from Christ the Redeemer, and Foothills School Division, and there were several teachers in the audience as well with very pertinent questions," she says. "The 45 minute discussion that followed the screening was very lively, I like to think it was very helpful and informative. I was very interested to see the significant number of concerned citizens coming forward."

Brown shares it's time Okotokians start a discussion about wireless radio frequency radiation, as its been called a possible carcinogen by the World Health Organization.

"The issue of SMART meters in Okotoks like the water meter upgrades, and the EPCOR gas meters, and our children's exposure hours and hours everyday. For many years of their life children in our schools in Okotoks children are being exposed to significant, and arguably harmful, amounts of radio frequency radiation in the classroom. This is not something we want to be ignoring, we need to start looking at the growing amount of studies being produced by researchers and medical professionals in the field, and start having a conversation about how we can reduce our children's exposure."

Brown encourages residents to visit SMART Okotoks' Facebook page to learn more about radio frequency radiation.
