Highwood High School's Symphonic and Jazz Bands are off to Niagara Falls Ontario next month to compete in National Band Championships.

One of the school's Band Directors, Paul Stelter says they're hosting a big concert this Sunday aimed at raising some money for the trip and showing off some of the local talent.

"It's both things together, you know our hope is that we can not only celebrate all of that music that's going on but that we can also help out these families sending these kids off," he says.

He says there are 50 students going on the trip which came about after a festival on Vancouver Island last year where the Symphonic band was recommended to advance to this year's Nationals.

Stelter says of course some of those band members have since graduated but a few have decided to go along to this year's event. He says unfortunately some of this year's members are not able to go on the trip.

"This kind of ties in with the concert, you know some of those kids are going to have a chance to perform on Sunday with us even though they may not be able to go, I mean the band is bigger than the trip but the trip is an exciting thing to push towards in our goals and efforts," Stelter says.

The Sunday concert features the two high school bands along with Karla Adolphe, the Highwood Shredders and John Wort Hannam.

It goes Sunday night at 6:00 p.m. at the High River Baptist Church and also includes a silent auction.

Entrance is by a suggested donation of $10 a person or $25 for a family.
