A local child suffering from Achromatopsia, a rare condition that affects colour vision, will be the centre of a fundraiser this coming Sunday.

Parents of Ezra Johnson, Jade and Travis, say they noticed symptoms of the condition when he was about six months old.

Jade Johnson, says they will be hosting a barbeque this coming Sunday in support of Ezra's very specific needs and his team that provides support and tools.

"They're going to supply us with hamburgers, we're going to have some fun foods, and all the proceeds go to Ezra's team, we have a team Achromat," she said.

Ezra's Father, Travis, says there are many components to Achromatopsia that produce vision challenges.

"The main thing we noticed with him when he was about six months old was that he had shaky eyes, and that is called nostagnes. A big part of the condition is colour blindness, so everything is just a shade of grey to him," he said.

Achromatopsia is partially genetic and very rare, affecting 1 in 50,000 children in North America.

Travis says there are many different aspects that affect Ezra's vision, including day time blindness.

"The debilitating part of the condition is called Hemeralopia, and that is the day blindness where bright sunlight or daylight will bleach out his vision," he said.

Ezra's family and supporters have put together a barbeque in his honour, where a hamburger purchase will go toward supporting his needs, tools and team.

The event takes place this Sunday, September 16th from 11:30 am to 4 p.m. at M&M Food Market.
