Most people in the Foothills know that great baking and Linda Longson belong together.

And now the rest of Canada knows it too, after watching her compete in the in the first round of the Great Canadian Baking show on CBC November 1st.

It all started when a friend Sally at work insisted on registering Longson for the show.

"She said I think you should be on this show," said Longson. "She started filling out the application and took my picture and off it went and two days later I had a call from the producer asking me if I wanted to go to an audition."

She is a payroll supervisor at the Foothills School Division and her coworkers get lots of treat.

Longson has baked cakes for all the members of her family over the last 20 years including eight grandchildren, which comes out to 160 cakes. She goes through four pounds of butter a week just for baking.

"I just love to bake," she said her introduction video.

The show features 10 armature bakers who have never baked anywhere except their own kitchens and each week someone is eliminated until they have a champion.

Longson said there was lots of learning going on during the filming.

"The different styles, the baking, there was lots of learning because there are always different ways to do things."

Everybody has different  ideas.

In week one Longson's Battenberg Cake placed third out of 10 bakers in the technical competition in the first show.

For cake week she also prepared Nanaimo Cupcakes, Lemon Cupcakes and Chocolate Raspberry Layer Cake with a mirror glaze.

Next week the competition features bread making.
