The Okotoks Fire Department is still dealing with grass fires, as the temperatures increase the conditions are ideal for wildfires.

Deputy Fire Chief Dwight Seymour says if it wasn't for the M.D. fire crews getting to the scene outside of Town, the fires could have been worse.

"We had three grass fires last week, and also attended another one with another department in our area," he says. "All, luckily, were contained to grass or pasture land, nobody was injured and no properties were lost."

Seymour says the cause of the grass fires could be more then just an improperly disregarded cigarette.

"They were in and around Okotoks, they all were contained to fairly small in nature with the ban on. One was from a lawn mower that sparked a fire and was contained was very quickly, both our crews and the M.D. crews and were able to contain them quickly to just a small size."

Seymour reminds all residents whether using a riding or push mower to lay off of trying get a head start on your yard work even if the grass is growing.

"There is some green starting to happen, but until we get some moisture we still have too much of the dead old grass underneath.  With lawn mowers, the biggest thing, is to make sure if you've got rocks or anything in and around your lawn, not only do they do much for your blade but they can also cause sparks and that can start fires."
