The rain cleared up and the sun came out just in time for the Okotoks Kite Festival on Sunday and plenty of families headed out to Riverside Park to enjoy the weather.

This is the ninth year the Kite Festival has been celebrated in town, this year there were plenty of kites along with trampolines, face painting, and other family friendly activities.

Mark Doherty Community Events Specialist Town of Okotoks says the day was all about getting families outdoors.

"It's just to give Okotokians an opportunity to get out as a family and enjoy the outdoors. To fly a kite is a very simple inexpensive outdoor activity, it gives some exercise, whether you're a young child or a grandparent you can enjoy it. It's really just to get out and celebrate being a family."

Doherty shares while the Town puts on many festivals throughout the year drawing large crowds, they want to keep the Kite Festival as local as possible.

"This one we don't want a lot of tourism, it's just for our locals. Our Harvest Festival in the fall is another one, where we don't want it to grow too much, we want to grow the activities, but we just want it for our local community. At events like this people get to know people, and that's what makes it a neighbourhood and community people are proud to live in."

He adds festivals like this make Okotoks a desirable community to reside in.

"I think its huge, and I think that's why Okotoks is such an attraction, lots of people want to move here, and live here because of all of the events that we do."
