The King's Own Calgary Regiment has a new training home in the Foothills.

The army reserve unit is sharing a space with the Foothills Air Cadets in a hangar at the High River Regional Airport.

Lieutenant-Colonel Chris Hunt, commanding officer of the King's Own, says moving just made sense because says they already do a lot of training in the Foothills.

"We will be running training here on Wednesday nights," said Hunt. "So that soldiers can attend classes and still get home at a decent hour as opposed to driving all the way to downtown Calgary."

The unit is also hoping the move will help to get them sign up some new local recruits.

Hunt, says being a reservist can be a fantastic part-time job.

"If you like ATV driving, if you like shooting, if you like being in the outdoors, this is an ideal job and we'll pay you to do it."

Recruits are also trained in advance driving skills.

Once your driving and shooting skills are good you move onto armoured vehicles and machine guns.

The deadline to apply for this summer is coming up fast - May 17.

"If people are interested in starting basic training this summer and having a full-time summer job we need to get them to get their applications submitted in the next week so there is enough time to do testing in the second half of May."
