As a way to help avoid future water restrictions and reduce water consumption, the Town of Okotoks watering schedule is back in effect.

On Thursdays and Sundays, odd numbered addresses can use their water outdoors, then Wednesdays and Saturdays are for even numbered addresses. On these days watering can take place from 6 a.m.- 9 a.m. and at night from 7 p.m.- 11 p.m.

Alysia Kirby, conservation educator for the Town, says there's a method behind these watering times which has proven to be effective.

"These are the best times to water your lawn to prevent water loss from heat and for a healthy lawn it only requires one inch of water per week," she says. "Since the Town has been doing this watering schedule over the past few summers the Town of Okotoks has achieved over 46% reduction in gross water consumption per capita which is one of the lowest per capita in Canada."

Kirby says residents can face significant penalties if they don't comply with the schedule.

"If you're caught on a day when you're not supposed to be watering you could have a fine from $100 up to $2,500."

She adds 40% of Okotoks water consumption over the summer comes from outdoor use.

The watering schedule is in effect from May 1- Oct. 31.
