Many may have laced up their runners and hit the weights in the pursuit of their health and fitness resolutions in the new year.

With local gyms getting fuller with people keen to hit their goals, the stereotype of resolution drop-outs also seems to follow.

Andrew Gustafson, owner of Natural High Fitness, says he does experience an increase in users in January but says it's not permanent.

"I'd probably say we're 20 percent higher in January than we would be in December because it tends to be a pretty slow month with people being distracted by Christmas," he says. "The percentage of those extra 20 percent that would stick around, 10 percent, probably half of them that make these resolutions would drop off."

Gustafson says he recommends people try to stay patient and be reasonable with their goal setting to help stay on board.

"Honestly it's simple, you make short term, attainable, realistic goals for yourself. The people who are making goals that are extremely lofty are the people that tend not to ever accomplish them because they don't see quick enough results." 

He says once those short term goals are accomplished then more can be made to help further progress.
