Hockey equipment can be a breeding ground for bacteria due to the build up of sweat and heat.

The bacteria that builds up in the equipment can cause the gear to smell.

Tavis MacPhee is the Manager at Okotoks Classic Source for Sports, and says that maintaining gear is important. A good way to clean it is odor repellent, some of these repellents have a silver ion solution in the formula.

"The anti bacterial additives from the silver ion solution help eliminate bacteria, helping to prevent any rashes or skin issues that can develop from the bacteria inside the gear," MacPhee said.

MacPhee says that the growth of bacteria happens in all pieces of equipment.

"The smell starts to occur almost immediately, inside the gloves can be especially bad."

Gloves and helmets can be two pieces of equipment that can have the most bacteria build up.

"Helmets are little more difficult, using the anti oder sprays with the silver ion solution will give it a general clean," MacPhee said.

MacPhee adds that it's best to clean your equipment at least once a year.
