With the evolution of technology, the internet is something that has become essential in not only in day-to-day life but also in the business world.

Small businesses are utilizing the internet more and more as a way to connect with potential clients.

Foothills MP John Barlow says historically high-speed internet was a want and not a need, but that has changed in recent years.

"With the global economy and the way the technology is now it has become a vital piece of infrastructure and that is how we need to look at it," Barlow says.

Even with new technologies, high-speed internet in some areas, usually rural, can be expensive, which can hinder some companies and individuals.

In July 2015 the Town of Nanton announced it would be bringing high-speed internet to the town.

Barlow says having proper high-speed internet will help with economic development.

"Small town businesses are now marketing themselves not just in Black Diamond, Turner Valley, High River and Okotoks but around the world and for them to be able to do that they need to access high-speed internet."

Barlow says the internet is also being used by farmers and ranchers as a way to eliminate the Canadian Wheat Board and new free-trade agreements.

"These are amazing opportunities for our local small businesses, ranchers and farmers," he says.

He adds that to take advantage of this global opportunity, access to high-speed internet is needed.
