A Holy Trinity Academy athlete has set provincial records in two events at provincial track and field championships earlier this month.

Elena McLaughlin, 18, won gold medals and set provincial records in both the diversity 100-metre and shot put events and won silver in the diversity 200-metre event.

She says she's always loved running so track and field was a natural fit for her.

"I always had a thing for running," she explains. "I did cross-country for Grade 8 and 9 and I wanted to try something different this year so I decided to do track since I heard track is a pretty good sport."

McLaughlin says she was grateful for support from her HTA track and field teammates throughout the experience.

"Just being around them every day for the last bit, it's just been so wonderful," she says. "They've been so nice to me."

McLaughlin, the first diversity athlete from HTA, is the school's first provincial record holder. She is also the most decorated track athlete at a single provincial championship in the school's history.

The Alberta Schools Athletic Association track meet was held June 2 and 3 in Edmonton.
