The Alberta Ranch Horse Versatility Association is bringing an event to the Okotoks Ag Society arena Saturday Aug 6.

Joanne Block says horses and riders will compete in events aimed at showing off the work done on ranches everyday.

"A lot of ranches have replaced horses with quads but there are still places that horses can get into that quads can't because on the bigger ranches cattle are sent out to pasture along the foothills and there's a lot of trees and brush there that quads can't get into that a horse can," Block says. "Having a horse go in there and bring those cattle out is still very essential to ranch life."

She says this is one of the first times there's been a competition in southern Alberta.

"I'd like to see this become a yearly event in southern Alberta because we have big ranches down here that still use the ranch horse," she says. "It is an all breed, it's not just  limited to quarter horses.

Those taking part will compete in Ranch Riding, Ranch Cutting, Working Cow Horse and Ranch Conformation at the end of the day.

There are two youth divisions and the Association has added to the pot to give them more incentive to come out and try their hand at the competition.

There's no charge to take it in and it goes from 9 in the morning.
