Historical signs along Elma and McRae Street are seeing their final days.

The removal of the Okotoks Historic Walking Tour markers on public and private properties will take place next month.

Kathy Coutts, Okotoks and District Historical Society member, says the signs were put up 17 years ago when the walking tour was first established and have become a bit of an eye sore.

"Those signs have not been replaced since then so they're looking their age and some of them have been vandalized, some of them have sharp edges now," she explains. "So we decided that we should remove the signs because some are unsightly and some are in poor and unsafe condition."

Coutts says the society is partnering up with the Town of Okotoks for the sign removal.

"The society will work with individual property owners on removing the rest of the signs that are located on private property. Some have put the sign directly on their building so we want to talk directly with those property owners and will be doing that in the next couple of weeks, but the Town will be removing the signs that are on the Town property."

The society will consult with community members and the Town to come up with a suitable replacement in the future.
