Winds measured at 130 km/h forced the closure of Highway 22 from Highway 533 south to Highway 3 earlier today. According to the most recent update from RCMP, Highway 22 has now been re-opened for travel north of Highway 3.

RCMP in the Crowsnest Pass and Turner Valley say extreme winds in the area had resulted in several vehicles crashing and four semi rollovers.

Winds were reported to be reaching 130km/h in some areas, which can result in large vehicles like semi tractor-trailers or holiday trailers being flipped or blow off the road.

In addition, the wind caused blowing snow and icy conditions.

RCMP say winds in the area are still at a speed that can affect vehicles such as holiday trailers and semis, especially those with empty trailers and they're encouraging drivers of these types of vehicles to consider delaying travel until wind speeds die down.
