After the Town of Okotoks approved the change of speed limits within communities to 40 km/h last month, Municipal Enforcement is going through the process of getting proper signage posted within the next few weeks.

Okotoks Municipal Enforcement Manager Tim Stobbs says the first signs to inform that Okotoks is slowing down their speed limits will come first.

"We just approved the actual design of the signs that will be placed at the entrance to the community which will indicate that Okotoks is a 40 km/h zone except where otherwise posted and those will be the first ones posted, then we will move onto our streets," he says.

Stobbs says no matter what way you come into town, you will have fair enough warning to abide by the new speed limit.

"The signs will be on the exterior of every entrance to town and then what we'll do is within the community, every time you would exit into a residential district following a 50 km/h zone, we will be placing a 40 km/h sign warning people that the speed change exists there."

Even though signage will be placed accordingly in areas of town, you'll have a little bit of freedom, but Stobbs hopes motorists will get into the habit of slowing down now instead of exactly when the signs are placed.

"We will not be taking any enforcement action until all of our signs are placed, and in the interim if we have areas that are at a speed greater than 40 k/h we may take the opportunity to stop and speak to them about the upcoming changes."
