One simple hashtag could make the difference in one person's life Wednesday.

It's #BellLetsTalk day on social media where Bell Media will donate $.05 per text, Facebook post or tweet with that hashtag to various mental health initiatives across the country.

The Calgary Counselling Centre has local offices in High River and CEO Dr. Robbie Babins-Wegner says the day is important on two grounds for helping those cope or deal with mental health issues.

"The goal of #BellLetsTalk covers two areas of mental health, one is stigma reduction, by talking about mental health issues it really makes the whole issue of mental health more comfortable for Canadians to talk about," she says. "The other goal is to raise awareness about mental health and to ensure that people know that there are services and support available in communities."

The Counselling Centre operates out of High River helping locals deal with the stigma that follows those with mental health problems and Babins-Wegener says the social media frenzy can help those suffering open up.

"Bell Lets Talk makes it okay for people to talk about it, makes it okay for people to call for help, it allows people to talk with each other. Sometimes those tweets are really cool and from people you wouldn't expect and at the same time dealing with the seriousness of the issue."

Babins-Wegener says the numbers may vary as a nation for those who suffer with mental health conditions but there's always way someone can help others in need.

"Formal stats are 1-in-5 but most of us know somebody who has either dealt with a mental issue or is dealing with a mental issue, so the formal stats say 1-in-5 but I really think it's one-in-one."

If you are suffering from mental health problems you can contact the High River Counselling Centre and everything is confidential.
