Through all the excitement of wearing costumes and collecting treats, it's important safety is kept top of mind on Halloween.

The Town of Okotoks is reminding residents that the rules of the road still apply to both pedestrians and motorists.

Tim Stobbs, municipal enforcement manager, says people can't dart out into traffic.

"Try to stay on the sidewalk and not out on the street when travelling and make sure that if there isn't a sidewalk where you're at to please walk facing the traffic," he says. "These kids are all excited and running across the road, but we have to encourage our children to look both ways before they cross the street."

Stobbs says an adult should be present with children if possible in case something were to happen. He also advises children that if they knock on a strangers door and are invited inside the house to not go in. Residents should also be careful with pets that will be out with their owners as well since you never know how an animal could react to different costumes.

Officers will be out patrolling making sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable evening.

"We encourage all people if they're out and about to make sure they have planned transportation home," he says. "Please do not drink and drive. We will have young people out on the road probably a little later than normal, and not only that, but we probably will have a little extra traffic due to the fact it'll be a beautiful night on Halloween."
