The Federal Government is providing $268,000 to make sure cattle arriving at action markets and slaughterhouses meet the standards for processing.

MacLeod MP John Barlow says consumers want to know what they're cooking and putting on the plate is as healthy as it can be.

"You know there's such a push now from consumers to ensure that the food that they're having at the supermarket or their plate is well cared for'" Barlow says. "Any opportunity that we have to improve the system and improve consumer confidence is what we want to do and we have a great partner with Alberta Farm Animal Care."

He says it'll also help alleviate the fears of other countries about the safety of meat processed here.

"We had a another case of BSE earlier this year, we had seven countries close their borders but nothing major and I think that shows that other countries around the world have a lot of confidence in our Canadian system," he says.

He says if animals arrive and look injured or diseased in some way there needs to be a process to assess them and prevent the injury in the first place.

The money is part of the government's Growing Forward 2 policy framework.
