The Foothills Salvage and Recycling Society is already giving back huge amounts this year, putting $120,000 back into the community in 2017 already.

The Salvage Society works to keep recyclables out of landfills, and provide a wide range of salvaged second hand items to the foothills.

One of FSRS' mandates is to keep stuff out of the landfill, Candice Dupre, FSRS general manager says the other mandate is to help people in the community.

"By the fact that we're a non profit organization we have residual income at the end of the year," she says. "Last year we were able to donate 180,000 so far in 2017 already being its only April we have actually donated 120,000 already, back into our community."

There are around 25 different organizations FSRS supports through its not for profit.

Along with a big donation, Dupre says FSRS has recycled an impressive amount in 2016. Excluding items sold by FSRS, 530 tonnes of materials such as; electronics, books, cardboard, plastic, paper, tires, medal, wood and clothing were recycled.

"That's absolutely amazing that we've kept that much out of the landfills, and that's just recycled items, not stuff that is sold on the floor, that's very exciting."
