Alberta Education announced $250-million for capital projects across the province just a week ago.

Foothills School Division Assistant Superintendent Drew Chipman says they were able to get in on that.

"They approved Foothills School Division for $1.9 million worth of projects," he says. "So that was just a couple of weeks back they gave us about 48 hours to come up with a number of projects that we think would be beneficial to the school division and so we put that application in and actually every project that we had on there was approved."

There's roof and ceiling repairs at Senator Riley school in High River along with roof repairs at Percy Pegler school in Okotoks, asbestos abatement from a crawlspace at Cayley school and floor replacement Big Rock school in Okotoks.

There's also the installation of low flow urinals, LED lighting and access doors.

The Province wanted projects that were ready to go and can be completed by October.

Chipman says they have an Infrastructure, Maintenance and Renewal list available to draw from that fit the criteria they were given.

"I believe that their thought was it would stimulate the economy and hopefully we have some local contractors and groups that will benefit from that work happening and certainly a great benefit to the school division to get that work done," Chipman says.

He says the items on the list will get done probably two years before they would have been done without the money from the Province.

Christ the Redeemer Catholic School Division is also eligible to benefit from the increase in funding, and is currently working on a list of potential projects.
