The Foothills School Division is preparing for the new curriculum announced by the Alberta government.

Revisions will be made to English and French in arts, language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and health and phys. ed with increased emphasis of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit context.

Francophone perspectives will be added in where it's found appropriate.

John Bailey, superintendent of FSD, says new curriculums go in front of teachers before being finalized.

"The curriculum is rewritten then it's sent out for sort of a vetting for schools, sometimes that involves only a handful of school divisions in the province, sometimes it's half the divisions or more," he says. "What they'll do is kind of vet the curriculum, they'll get teachers to actually use it in class, find out where the wrinkles are and get that information back before it's actually finalized."

Bailey adds the new curriculum will be introduced over a period of four years.

"Kindergarten to Grade 4, they hope to have those revisions done by December 2018, Grades 5 to 8 by December 2019, about half of the subjects in Grades 9 to 10 by December 2020, the other half by December 2021, and then they plan to finish off the subjects in Grades 11 and 12 by December 2022."

According to Bailey, new text books and resources will also be developed to fit the new curriculum.
