FortisAlberta crews will be replacing some aging transformers in town today, resulting in power outages for some residents.

Alana Antonelli, manager of corporate communications for FortisAlberta, says the work will occur between 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but the times for power outages will vary. She says they try to schedule the work to minimize the impact of power outages on customers.

About 90 primarily-residential customers in the Westmount and Cimarron areas of town are expected to be affected by today's planned power outage.

"We're going to be replacing some transformers in that area due to age, or, in some cases, they're too low to operate, so we raise them up just for safety reasons," Antonelli explains.

She says customers are called 48 hours ahead of time to let them know about any power outages that will affect them, and adds that FortisAlberta has an app that can be downloaded for free from the App Store which pinpoints the areas where work will be taking place and where power outages will occur.

She thanks residents for their patience and reminds motorists to drive safely around crews and equipment at work.
