The land transfer between the Town of Okotoks and the Foothills School Division has been completed, and the new K-9 school is that much closer to becoming a reality.

The new school will be located across from Holy Trinity Academy and soon you'll start to see work work commence on the new site.

Foothills School Division Superintendent John Bailey

Division Superintendent John Bailey says they're looking forward to actually breaking ground on the Wedderburn land instead of ust talking about it.

"The Town is planning to have all the utilities in place by the end of September and we will begin construction in the fall once those are in and of course projected to open in 2018, are schools are very full."

Bailey says once the school opens it should help keep classrooms less cramped as they are over 90 percent full.

"It will really help alleviate a lot of the enrolment pressures we've had at this time particularly with the K-9 level. Of course with the modernization of Foothills Composite High School and Alberta High School of Fine Arts, part of that is also adding some additional student spaces so that also will help as students move into the high school age."

Once work begins in the fall Bailey says the future students families will be able to have a first look and voice on its development.

"We will be going into the community, having some meetings about the new school, talking about what we see in it and what the community would like to see. As far as programming and what might occur in that school so I would anticipate that would happen in January or February."
