The Foothills Salvage and Recycling Society has given back to the community.

Through residual income and volunteer hours the society has split up $138,123.50 to about 24 different groups in the Foothills.

Groups who received funding include Habitat for Humanity, Boys and Girls Club, Sheep River Health Trust, Okotoks Family Resource Centre, Literacy for Life, Food for Thought, Kids Sport, Big Brothers Big Sisters, It Takes A Village, Salvation Army Food Bank, Okotoks Food Bank, Turner Valley Food Bank, Okotoks Food Bank, Foothills Country Hospice, Rowan House, Meals on Wheels, Ala Cart, ALS Society, Okotoks Pound Rescue, Leukemia Society, the Evangelical Church, St. Francis De Sales, and St. James.

Candice Dupre, Manager of the FSRS, says the society is self sustained.

"We don't get any government grants," she says. "We get no money from any other outside program so all the money we give out is solely from proceeds from the donations, so the donations provide the proceeds that we then give to the community."

The Salvage Centre is located at the Foothills Landfill where residents can purchase donated goods and drop off items.

Dupre says the society is one big family and it feels great to give back.

"One of the beautiful things about working in this position and having this organization ran by a board is sitting around a big table and deciding where this huge amount of money is going to... also the volunteers and them giving the money to charities of their choice. There's nothing more rewarding."

The FSRS is getting ready to honour it's volunteers on Apr. 16 with an appreciation event at the Highwood Golf and Country Club.
