The Foothills MD is continuing its fight against the idea of Growth Management Boards.

The idea has been floated for awhile and last month appeared in the NDP Government's proposed amendments to the Municipal Government Act.

Mayor Larry Spilak says the loss of autonomy is the biggest concern.

"It always has been exactly that, you know, it's been worded different ways but what it boils down to is having your elected officials make decisions on your behalf, versus having having elected officials from other jurisdictions made decisions on your behalf," Spilak says. "I can tell you that I would not have any information to make a decision with what goes on in Airdrie or in Didsbury, or in Cochrane. I have all the information to make a good decision within the MD of Foothills and likewise I believe the councillors in the other areas share that."

Under the proposed rules regional boards would be set up with representatives from municipalities surrounding Calgary and Edmonton.

Spilak and others are concerned about the clout the big city would hold on the board.

Spilak says there was some talk of linear taxation and changing the taxation of farmland but the government rejected those changes which he says is positive news.
