It hasn't been the summer one B.C. couple were planning on when they left their home for holidays just over a month ago.

The wildfires hit while Maddi and Jeffrey Newman were on Vancouver Island, they are from 108 Mile House, one of the first places to get evacuated.

And it has been an adventure ever since.

First they had to drive around many closed roads in order to pick up their dog Teejun who was in a kennel close to home, then they came to Alberta to stay with their friends Doug and Paula Elliott.

"It was all touch and we were glued to the phone all the time," said Maddi. "Trying to get information from the person that was looking after Teejun and our friends and what had happened to them."

Once they arrived safe and sound in High River they were enjoying an unexpected but welcome visit with friends and they headed out one night to a house concert, but on the way back just after midnight they ended up in a car crash.

"I was tapping to turn a corner but we hit gravel and sort of floated into the ditch. I wasn't going very fast so none of us were injured," Maddi said.

Out in a rural area without cell phone service the couple went looking for help and had to walk over five kilometres to find some.

And they have just found out the car will take three weeks to fix so they will be here even longer.

But even worse was they day they lost Teejun, who took advantage of an open gate to go have a little walk about.

He was found by sisters Robin Toomey and Hailey Mueller, who loved the adorable pup. Messages were put out on social media and soon the family were reunited.

"It almost feels scary we need to be back home where we are safe," said Maddi with a laugh. "Or else these terrible things will keep happening to us."

However the story doesn't quite end there the sisters who found Teejun had hosted a lemonade stand to raise funds for people who were involved with the B.C. wildfires.

So they took the money they had raised and gave it to the Newman family to help out, but the couple plan on paying it forward by taking the money home to donate to a local fire-related cause to help in their community.
