Many may be gearing down into the Christmas holiday season but not the Okotoks Fire Department.

This past week the Fire Department were on the scene for numerous emergency situations.

Fire Chief Ken Thevenot says the calls they responded to were all different types of situations.

"This week we had 16 responses, two fire responses, we have seven medical, we had some alarm system activations an three motor vehicle accidents we had to deal with," he says.

20 calls is an average week for the department but for the second straight week they were below average on calls and Thevenot says their total response rate is almost par to 2014.

"For total responses year to date is 984 responses which puts us 58 responses ahead of last year at this time."

Thevenot's safety advisory for the week is the warm and cold weather mixing together that can create a beautiful drive and also can lead to icy conditions when its warm out and the ice hasn't quite melted in  spots leaving those walking or driving vulnerable to slips or sliding in a vehicle.

He says black ice can sneak you to quickly.

"It's been really icy lately, with this warming of weather, we may see some of that black ice on the roads and sidewalks so be very careful when you're out for walks and driving when the snow is melting and you hit icy patches."
