With a fire ban in place, the Okotoks Fire Department wants to make sure residents are safe this long weekend.

On Wednesday, the Town upgraded it's fire restriction to a complete fire ban due to the hot and dry conditions which are expected to continue over the weekend.

Pat MacIsaac, deputy fire chief of the Okotoks Fire Department, says no matter the activity, people need to be cautious.

"It's their obligation to maintain fire safety, the conditions are very dry so whether you're barbecuing, doing activities in the backyard, discarding cigarette butts, we urge people to use common sense and be cognisant that it is very dry."

No campfires, other open fires or burning barrels are allowed in campgrounds or backyards, including charcoal briquettes and outdoor torches of any kind while the ban is in place.

Gas or propane stoves and barbeques and portable propane fire pits are allowed.

MacIsaac says those who planned on heading outdoors for their thrills this weekend need to rethink their plans.

"Out on the public lands and provincial lands OHV's are actually banned right now and there's a reason for it because they have started fires in the past and it's not worth it to take that risk."

Caution should also be used when using any power tools or other items that can cause sparks.

All fire permits have been suspended and no new ones will be issued at this time.
